The first documented Mexican basketball team in Omaha, NE is known as the Omaha Aztec Team. The Omaha Aztec Basketball Team was founded in October 1938 at the Social Settlement, 31st and Q St. Soon after its establishment, the Omaha Aztec Team began playing against other Mexican-American teams in nearby states. Other Mexican basketball teams in Omaha include the Omaha Mexican Veterans (1947-1948), Omaha S.M.M. (1949-1950), and Our Lady of Guadalupe Team (1951-1964). Our Lady of Guadalupe changed their name to Mexican American Athletic Club (M.A.A.C.) for two years in 1963.
Most of these photos have been donated to the U.S. Latino Heritage thanks to Lano Oropeza, the founder of Mexican basketball teams who coached for 28 years. His legacy continues with Mexican/Latino basketball teams and tournaments that are organized today.
